Frequently anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: Game Management Units
Abstract:
This dataset contains boundaries for Arizona Game Management Unit (GMU) boundaries. A Game Management Unit is a division established by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission for wildlife management purposes, including the setting of hunting seasons. A GMU specifies areas and times for which certain wildlife species may be taken. See Arizona Game and Fish Commission Rule 12-4-108 in the official Arizona Hunting and Trapping Regulations for legal descriptions of GMU boundaries. The Arizona Hunting and Trapping Regulations booklet may be picked up at any Arizona Game and Fish Office or accessed electronically via the Internet at www.azgfd.gov/regs/mainregs.pdf. The GMU shapefile underwent an extensive boundary review process in summer 2011 & was finalized in November 2011. In January 2013 the GMU file was edited to reflect changes to ARS Title 12 Chapter 4 Rule 108.
Supplemental_Information:
A legal description of designated Game Management Unit boundaries is available from Arizona Game and Fish Department offices (Commission Rule 12-4-108).

Why was the data set created?

Data are provided for a variety of planning and analysis purposes.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 01-Jan-2011 (process 1 of 2)
A written description of the boundaries was used to create polygons feature class using a ArcGIS Desktop 10-ArcInfo geodatabase. The written descriptions are located in the official Arizona Hunting and Trapping Regulations publication. Data integrity was checked using geodatabase topology rules. Attributes were added to describe the GMUs, and the boundary description was added directly to the attribute table. The feature class was exported to ESRI shapefile format using ArcGIS ArcCatalog.

    Date: 11-Feb-2013 (process 2 of 2)
Game Management Unit features were updated to reflect changes to legal descriptions describing game management unit boundaries. Unit 47M was deleted, and boundaries for 25M, 26M and 42 were added according to the new boundary descriptions.
